There has been a 25% increase in Premiership stars past and presents getting their hair done, according to new industry figures.
And experts say the surge in popularity for the £6,000 procedures is down to the ‘Wayne Rooney effect’.
The England captain has inspired dozens of other players to go under the knife.
Some have been happy to go public with their procedures whereas others have preferred to keep it private.
One of the stars who has made no secret that he has had work done is Didi Hamann, the former Liverpool and Man City star.
Didi said that Manchester United striker Rooney was a factor in him seeking treatment at the famous Crown Clinic in Manchester where lots of celebrities have hair transplants.
Didi, 41, said: ”I have always liked Wayne both as a player and as a human. I remember thinking when he had his hair done, ‘Good for him – he wants to look better and isn’t afraid to tell the world about it. I’m the same. I am happy to go public and make clear that you can really benefit from giving nature a helping hand.”
Ex-German international Didi had 4,000 hairs transplanted into his temples and the front of his hairline by surgeon Asim Shahmalak who has performed procedures on stars such as the model Calum Best, 34, and Homes Under The Hammer presenter Martin Roberts, 52.
Other soccer stars to recently undergo transplants include former Leicester City striker and TV pundit Steve Claridge, 49, and ex-England and Sunderland defender Michael Gray, 40.
Ex-German international Hamann, who has settled in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, since retiring from football, said that he started losing his hair around eight years ago. Male pattern baldness runs in the family and both his brother and his father have lost their hair. He chose Crown Clinic’s Dr Shahmalak because of his reputation as one of the world’s leading hair transplant surgeons.
He said: ”I started losing it when I was still playing, It happened very gradually and I would notice that I was getting thinner around the temples and the front of my hairline. It didn’t bother me too much when I was still playing but obviously, my career now is in the media and it is important that you look good. You owe to the viewer to really take care of your appearance.
“I have seen how the technology has developed and there are now simple ways you can address the problem and restore your lost hair.
“I had also heard about Dr Shahmalak’s global reputation for surgical excellence. I knew I was in very safe hands.”
Didi – a member of Liverpool’s legendary 2005 Champions League winning team – spent a day at Crown Clinic having 2,300 grafts (around 4,000 individual hairs) moved from the back and sides of his scalp to his temples and the front of his hairline. He had the same FUE procedure as Rooney where individual grafts are harvested one by one and moved to the donor area.
He had the operation at Crown Clinic in May and it will take at least six months for the newly transplanted hair to grow back.
Dr Shahmalak said he had been approached by some of the biggest names in football about having hair transplants.
He said: ”You hear about footballers earning millions of pounds through their ‘image rights.’ An important part of that image is having great-looking hair, so it is no surprise that increasing numbers of big names are following Wayne Rooney’s lead in having a hair transplant. It was an honour working with Didi who is a lovely man and one of the legends of the game.

Dr Shahmalak said there has been a 25% increase in the number of soccer stars having procedures thanks to the ‘Wayne Rooney effect’- and more would come forward when they see the success of their mates’ operations.
