What is an FUE Hair Transplant?
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a type of hair transplant surgery where individual follicular units are extracted from the back or side of a patient’s scalp and transplanted into the balding area. These will then turn into healthy hair-producing follicles, offering a realistic and seamlessly blended look.
Before the procedure, patients are given a local anaesthetic used in both the donor and recipient areas – in fact, we often find that patients fall asleep while grafts are removed and transplanted.
An FUE hair transplant is often the best option for those looking for minimal scarring and a faster recovery time. A standard recovery timeline for FUE hair surgery is around 10-14 days, with results starting to show from the *6-month mark. A good option for men who like to wear their hair short or shaved, as FUT does tend to leave a linear scar. The vast majority of our patients choose an FUE transplant. Doc said to keep this.
*Each individual case is different, and the results you can expect will be covered in your consultation.
Individual follicular unit grafts are removed manually using a tiny round punch. These are then moved to cover the balding areas. The recipient site is prepared using a fine needle, and the follicles can then be placed where they will eventually grow into hair-producing follicles.
The grafts are expertly blended into the thinning or balding areas to seamlessly match the natural growing characteristics of your original hair. FUE grafts can be vulnerable due to the fact that there tends to be less protective tissue around the roots, so it means extra care is needed to ensure that the grafts survive.
Our expert FUE surgeon will be sure to talk you through the aftercare process to help make sure you get the very best result possible.

For patients coming from the city centre, the most straightforward route is the direct airport tram line.
Getting here by Train
Manchester Airport has a train station at the heart of the airport campus, with easy access to the terminals and nearby buildings. There are direct rail connections to and from Manchester Airport, including services to Manchester Piccadilly, and the airport is also well connected with journeys from places such as Stockport and Liverpool. For example, Stockport to Manchester Airport is around 39 minutes on average, and Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Airport is around 1 hour 26 minutes on Northern services.

FAQs
How much does an FUE transplant cost?
At Crown Clinic, prices for FUE transplants start from £4,000. This treatment tends to be slightly more expensive than FUT surgery because the procedure is much more labour-intensive, as each hair follicle needs to be removed individually. However, one main advantage is that, unlike FUT, no strip is taken from the back of the scalp, so scarring is minimal.
Will I need to shave my head for FUE hair transplant surgery?
Some patients are put off having an FUE hair transplant procedure because they are worried that they will have to fully shave the head for the surgeon to harvest the donor grafts – but thankfully, this is not the case. We can shave the back and sides of the scalp to obtain the donor hair. The hair not taken regrows quite quickly. You can visit your hairdresser 14 days after surgery to blend the hair in at the back.
What are the benefits of an FUE hair transplant?
The main benefit of the FUE transplant technique is the reduction in scarring. The minimal scarring caused by extracting the follicular units heals quickly and leaves small circular scars which are barely visible once hair grows back. FUE has benefits for patients who are particularly active, as the lack of incisions means there are no limitations on strenuous activity after the procedure. This is also helpful for patients who have very tight or very loose scalps.
Who is suitable for an FUE transplant?
Our surgeon performs transplants on both male and female patients. What he is looking for in a patient is a good covering of the donor hair at the back and sides of the scalp. Nearly everyone has a permanent ‘horseshoe’ of hair covering the back and side of the scalp. This is where the donor hair is taken.
