The most popular reason given for why hair refuses to behave is sheer bad luck. Whilst bad luck may seem unavoidable, there are ways you can manage your hair to reduce the chances of experiencing a bad hair day. Dr Shahmalak explains that “good diet, limiting stress and not damaging your hair through over bleaching” are some of the ways you can improve your hair quality.
Around 42% of those surveyed put their hair difficulties down to the weather, making it the second most popular cause.
Rain, humidity and summer heatwaves were all given as explanations for why our hair may not always look its best. In order to combat the impact that harsh weather conditions have on our hair, Dr Shahmalak has suggested that regular trims and keeping hair conditioned with high quality products are the best ways to lock in moisture and avoid frizz arising from heat and humidity.
Lie-ins have been identified as a major root cause of bad hair days. Women in particular blame their hair struggles on lack of time to do their hair. The struggle with hair maintenance and our physical appearance overall can negatively impact self confidence and can quickly become a stressful experience.
Avoiding stress is one of the key solutions identified by Dr Shahmalak. He explains that stress affects hormones, which results in poor looking hair, so finding time to relax is a simple way to restore your hair to its former glory.
Survey respondents explained that they found it impossible to get their hair sorted after a big night out. This could be down to a combination of factors varying from lack of sleep to headaches, that could be preventing people from achieving their desired hairstyle.
However, if this is a consistent issue, poor diet could be the root cause. Dr Shahmalak says that a poor diet that lacks in nutrients results in dry and brittle hair. In order to prevent this, food such as eggs, fish and spinach should be consumed to strengthen hair cuticles and restore your hair’s lustre.
Both men and women can fall victim to thinning hair with age. Around 40% of women experience hair loss at some point in their lives, compared to 65% of men. Dr Shahmalak explains that there has been a huge rise in women seeking hair transplants, after suffering permanent hair loss due to illness or pregnancy.
However, the procedure is more commonly associated with men, as more male celebrities such as Calum Best and Wayne Rooney have opted for FUE hair transplants.
