This is a commonly asked question when it comes to hair transplant surgery – how soon after your hair transplant will your hair start to noticeably grow?
Initially, the transplanted hair will start to grow thin, whispy, even colourless, and over time will gradually become thicker and fuller. Around three months after your surgery, sometimes much earlier you can expect to see a few new hairs showing through – the growth may not be even at first and appear patchy, but it will eventually, so don’t worry!
Soon after surgery, don’t be alarmed if your new hair starts to shed after a few weeks. This is completely normal, and is caused by hair transplants triggering the ‘dormant phase’ – whereby the hair grafts rest after growth. It is the hair that falls out, not the follicle which is the part that contains the growth centre. This is something that most people who have undergone a hair transplant will experience, and is simply a stage that the hair must go through before it can really start to grow full.
Sometimes you may find that areas of the scalp develop spots that resemble acne. See this as a positive sign as it is simply the hairs trying to grow up through the scalp, which can sometimes become trapped – much like an ingrown hair.
At the five to six month mark, you can expect to see results from your hair transplant with a large majority of the new hairs showing through.

At around eight to ten months, the hair will appear at its longest and thickest yet, with most of the hair grafts reaching matuirty and showing through, a good few inches long.
A year on, you should expect final results, but characteristics such as colour and texture changes can take longer to develop themselves, therefore after a year the appearance of the hair can still change.
Of course every case is different as some people’s hair will grow much faster than others. The word ‘results’ is a subjective one, but these are average timescales of when you could start to expect results after your hair transplant surgery.
