Non-Surgical Alternatives For Hair Loss

Hair transplants can be a costly and lengthy process, that’s why many have gravitated toward non-surgical hair replacement methods.

These hair loss treatments usually require less commitment than a hair transplant, however, the results may vary between individuals and are not permanent solutions for hair thinning or hair loss.

Rogaine (Minoxidil)

Rogaine, also known by its generic name ‘Minoxidil’, is a topical treatment that is applied to the scalp, and is thought to work by dilating blood vessels in the scalp, which stimulates hair growth.

This treatment can be used by both men and women to treat male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness. It is sold at different concentrations for men and women and unlike Propecia, Rogaine is available over-the-counter, therefore you don’t need a prescription to get it.

However, there are some disadvantages of using Rogaine to treat hair loss. For example, it can take many months before you see results and even after that amount of time, hair regrowth is not guaranteed and may not work for everyone. Also, it can cause unwanted hair growth, such as increased facial hair, as a result of using the topical treatment.

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)

LLLT utilises lasers to promote hair growth in both men and women, and there is now a wide range of tools on the market that are used to administer this treatment. LLLT is thought to work by the lasers being absorbed into the cells, which triggers enhanced cell activity; however, there is currently not enough scientific research available to be sure how the treatment works.

There is some evidence to show that this method does promote hair growth, however, it only works on those with androgenetic alopecia and even then may not work on everyone.

Do Non-Surgical Hair Replacement Methods Really Work?

Whilst there is a lot of evidence to support the use of non-surgical treatments as an effective means to achieve hair regrowth or minimise hair loss; the results vary significantly between individuals and only last as long as you use the treatment. Whereas FUT and FUE hair transplants are the only treatments currently on the market that yields permanent results.
