Being able to style and experiment with freshly transplanted hair is a thrilling experience for many of our clients. That being said, the first few weeks following a hair transplant are crucial for the tissue and new follicles to heal, so it’s vital to be especially gentle with your scalp. So, when exactly can you dye your hair after a hair transplant?
How long after a hair transplant can I dye my hair?
Prior to colouring your hair, it’s crucial to wait at least 4 to 6 weeks after your surgery. After a hair transplant, the hair follicles are more delicate, and the abrasive chemicals in hair dye run the risk of causing irritation and harming the grafts.
Crown Clinic uses Follicular Unit Transplant/strip (FUT) and Follicular Unit Excision/Extraction (FUE) as its two primary hair transplantation techniques. Both techniques include transplanting viable hair follicles from the scalp’s donor area to the areas experiencing hair loss. Hair grafts are inserted into these small incisions in the target area of the scalp.
The first thing to keep in mind when caring for your hair after a hair transplant is that it will be recovering. Your hair transplant’s donor location will be sensitive, the grafted hair follicles in the recipient area will be delicate, and you will be attentively adhering to aftercare guidelines, specifically when and how to wash your hair.
The best hair dye to use after a hair transplant
Even if you usually colour your hair at home, it is a good idea to visit a professional salon. A knowledgeable stylist can choose a treatment and colour that go well with your hair type and personal preferences.
To lessen the possibility of allergic reactions, if you still prefer to colour your hair at home, remember to first perform a patch test at least 24 hours before dying your hair. Whatever product you choose, make sure you carefully follow the instructions to prevent any problems.
Can you bleach hair after a hair transplant?
It would be wise to hold off on colouring or bleaching your hair for four to six weeks until your scalp has fully recovered. Bleaching agents and peroxides contain chemicals that can be harsh on the scalp and hair grafts, especially while they are still healing following surgery.
Can transplanted hair turn grey?
Melanin controls a person’s hair colour. The amount of melanin in our hair follicles depends on our genetic makeup. The production of melanin declines with age, which causes the hair shafts to gradually lose their colour and eventually turn grey or even white. While a person’s genetic makeup mostly determines when they start ageing, lifestyle factors also matter.
Hair that has been transplanted will continue to behave as if it had never been relocated because it has the same traits and genetic composition as hair that is still in the donor area. Therefore, the transplanted hair will gradually lose its colour if the hair in the donor area starts to become grey.
