Overwhelmingly, it appears to be the pre-Christmas winter period that is the most popular time for hair transplants. This may be because people may choose to have a hair transplant in time for Christmas so they look and feel their best, and can enjoy the festivities without any worries. They can also take time off and return to work fully healed once the Christmas period is over. While the weather or time of year doesn’t affect hair transplants, we see them become more popular in the winter months for multiple reasons.
The most popular time of year to have a hair transplant
Why is it so popular to have a hair transplant at this specific time of year? It may be due to numerous factors. For example, the absence of sweat and the cold, dry air we experience in winter can dry your scalp out, contributing to increased hair loss. This may prompt someone to decide to book a hair transplant in winter months rather than in summer.
Also, the absence of scalp sweat, which is usually more prominent during the warmer months, can also be beneficial to your scalp’s healing process. What’s more, in colder months, your body naturally produces more melatonin which should contribute to less hair loss and shedding by promoting hair growth.
To reiterate the findings in our previous guide about summer and winter hair transplants, we concluded that in winter, you are able to keep your scalp cleaner and lower your risk of infection due to the absence of sweat and sunburn. You’re also less likely to spend a lot of time outside, which can be detrimental to your recovery as taking it easy in the first few days following your transplant is usually recommended. This is arguably what makes the pre-Christmas period a popular time for hair transplants.
What time of year are you most likely to experience hair loss?
Hair loss is more common in autumn and summer than in other seasons. A study from Medical News Today found that by their 50s, 85% of men are more likely to experience significant hair loss, contrasted with around 40% hair loss in women, due to male or female pattern baldness.
Female hair loss is most common in the summer months, due to extreme weather changes that can cause hair follicles to go into a phase known as ‘resting’, which is also known as telogen effluvium.
Deciding when to get a hair transplant is completely your decision, and don’t be deterred or discouraged from booking in for one by the weather or other people’s advice. There is no right or wrong time of the year to book in for one, however, booking for a hair transplant for Christmas appears to be a popular option among our patients.
